The project

This open-plan industrial-styled home in Dudley Park, renovated by WA Custom Glass, was recognised by the 2023 AGWA Design Awards, taking out the top spot for the Residential Window/Glass Project Under $30,000.

The retrofit involved a complete overhaul, by introducing internal louvre windows, fixed and sliding windows, and a frosted doorway all encompassed in an aluminium framing, to deliver the perfect harmony of privacy and space for a previously underutilised area of the home.

Utilising their expertise and experience, the team at WA Custom Glass were able to help the client to realise their ideal set-up while exploring a variety of design ideas and alternatives, working closely to bring their vision to life.

The homeowner Nicoleen said, “It’s completely changed the way we use the space. We had a vision and we had some photographs from the internet, but, we never thought that this was even possible.”

The brief

The homeowners’ brief consisted of several key factors:

1. Make the upstairs bedroom/study feel more private when being used.
2. When not being used, the house should feel open
3. Premium products
4. Match the aesthetics of the house
   
5. Improve airflow of the home

The result

Master Glazier and General Manager of WA Custom Glass, Brent Beahan told AGWA’s Builtview Magazine, “Our team and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome, which exceeded our customers’ expectations of transforming their unused space upstairs to a much-needed retreat where they are able to shut off, reflect and look out over the Mandurah estuary – I am really proud of the work we did.”

We opted for a 6.38mm laminate safety glass for the fixed windows to significantly reduce noise, whilst adding an additional layer of safety. 

These custom-fit and purpose-built windows create a sense of privacy in the room, ideal for when the husband works from home or when guests come to stay.

The louvre windows, which we used a 6mm toughened safety glass for, serve as a functional and aesthetic gateway, allowing airflow to circulate the house from the upstairs balcony. 

The functionality of the louvres also allows the home to transition between private and open, seamlessly, depending on how you want to use the space.

When the family are entertaining, the windows and doors are opened wide – making the space feel much larger and open.

Contrastingly, the louvres are shut to achieve a secluded bedroom or workspace.

The west-facing orientation of these windows and the scale of the glass invites the evening sunlight to engulf the entirety of the downstairs living space, helping the family to save on energy costs and enjoy long summer days. 

Charcoal lustre aluminium frames were chosen to compliment the existing exposed brick and natural timber, enhancing its industrial aesthetic.

Nicoleen, the homeowner, told us, “The thing that was really helpful is that we went through so many different scenarios with you guys (WA Custom Glass).”

“So we had all of these different configurations – with the louvres, without, and they were always curious, asking ‘what about this’ and showing us new alternatives, it was amazing.”

“I loved that they were actually in my house, going through all of the ideas, variations and small details – like helping me to match the size and width of the top frame, to the other window frames in my house and using the same door handle as my front door – all of those little things that I would have never even thought about”, said Nicoleen.
